Porcelain and watercolor painter Betty Gerstner is the Kailua Village Artists’ featured member for June.

The Alii Sunset Plaza gallery will display Gerstner’s latest porcelain creations, including “If a Mermaid Wore Shoes,” a piece she created using porcelain slip. She cast the shoes and shells, applied underglaze of ceramic paint to them and high-fired the whole structure. Gerstner then applied glaze and fired the piece again before finishing the structure with regular china paint.

For “Monstera Vase,” Gerstner used a mold and then modified it by creating a “lettuce edge.” She cut it down and finished it by applying glazes and regular china paint.

The public is invited to talk story with Gerstner Sunday and June 17 at the Alii Sunset Plaza gallery or June 24 and 29 at the Outrigger Keauhou Beach Resort gallery.
